Old Headlines, Great Haunts
Halloween is a busy time of year for me. I joke that it’s “ghost season.” Everyone seems interested in finding different haunted sites to explore.
My advice is usually: Go to the library and search old newspapers for reports of ghosts and haunted places.
However, I know that’s a nuisance.
Back in 2005, I started posting links to ghost reports in the news. I continued for about a year and a half, until I was too busy to maintain the list. Then — during one server change or another — I removed the headlines website altogether. I figured it was outdated.
Now, working on some new, shorter books for October, I’ve been using some of those old reports for my research. They’ve been more useful than I expected. So, for the past couple of days, I’ve been restoring the entries so everyone can use them. They’re at http://HollowHill.com/HauntedHeadlines.
However, that’s probably a love-it-or-hate-it website. It’s either useful… or it’s a waste of time. It depends on where you are, and how much research you’re willing to do.
You might wonder why anyone would care about a list of links — many of them broken — from back in 2005 and 2006.
Well, 2005 & 2006 were when we saw a surge of interest in ghost hunting. Everyone who even might have a ghost, was talking about it. Many haunted places were mentioned in news stories, but now — five or six years later — a lot of people have forgotten about those ghosts.
By checking my old lists of links (and descriptions of the sites mentioned in them), you might find some fresh places for your research. Or, you might find additional background information about favorite haunts. That’s why I’ve placed them online again.
The listings are at Hollow Hill’s Haunted Headlines.
Though the listings are in date order, month by month, I’ve tagged every page by location. So, you can use the tags or you can use the Search form at that website, to look for places near you.
Those links may only be useful for really dedicated ghost enthusiasts willing to do extra research.
However, the links (and related info) are easier to use than a stack of dusty old newspapers at the public library.
And, to answer the obvious question… yes, I might add new links, as time permits. I’m not sure yet.

I love going through old newspapers looking for interesting things! Unfortunately, my local library does not have any sort of comprehensive index of subjects, so unless I have a lead, finding this information is especially tedious…but well worth it! I also recently signed up for a “contemporary” online news archive source with archives only going back about 20 years, and it has yielded some gems.
If anyone is in the area of Lawrence Co. Ohio, the Lawrence County Register keeps some excellent old-time newspaper stories on ghosts! Here’s the link:
