Okay, I lied. . .

. . .About never going back to Gilson Road Cemetery. After last year's visit, I was done. No thank you. I'm chicken and I'm the first to admit it. However, my six-year-old is really into "creepy stuff" this year, and had been begging me to bring him to a "real creepy cemetery" in a persistent manner that only six-year-olds can pull off effectively. Okay, maybe if we went during the day this time, and don't do anything potentially offensive like shining bright headlights into the cemetery for prolonged periods. . .

During the mid-afternoon on October 15, my son and I finished up our errands and headed out to Gilson Road. In this website and others I have been reading about how everyone's electronic devices inexplicably go dead during such investigations, even with new batteries: cameras, voice recorders, electro-magnetic measurers, hand-held thermal thingies, etc. Me, I manage to screw up a whole car during my last visit. (While it might be scientifically interesting to see if it would happen again, I'm still making payments on the last car which was supposed to have lasted for several more years, and will be making payments on the new one forever.) I know it sounds silly, but in case it was more than just a coincidence, this time I parked my car a little ways down the road beyond sight of the cemetery walls, and my son and I walked back.

It was a beautiful but windy fall afternoon, and being so close to Halloween, I was expecting to see more people there. But we had all of Gilson Road to ourselves during our visit. The gates were closed, so we stepped over the stone wall instead. I was speaking aloud to my son, telling him that we were VISITING, and that we were going to be RESPECTFUL, and that the cemetery was officially open to VISITORS during daylight hours. There was a feeling of watchfullness as we entered, but after my speech, the feeling subsided for me. My son, on the other hand, stopped giggling, looked at me with wide eyes, and said, "Mommy, we have to leave RIGHT NOW!"

"Why, are you scared?"

"YES!"

"Of what? Do you see or hear anything?"

"Ummm, no. I'm okay now Mommy, we can stay."

We enjoyed our visit, reading the epitaphs, looking through the gravestone with the hole in it, pointing out the little gifts that people have left behind on the gravestones: coins, marbles, bits of ribbon, shells, colorful pebbles. I made sure my son knew not to touch them.

My son started tugging insistently on my hand. "All done, Mommy. We have to go now. RIGHT NOW!"

The wind grew stronger and the skies began to darken very suddenly, and I looked up and agreed. We both ran back to the car and got in just as buckets of water came pouring down upon us, fueled by gale-force winds. We couldn't have been there for more than 15 minutes.

My son continues to state that he did not see or hear anything that made him afraid, but he doesn't want to go back to that cemetery.

Hi Fiona,

I've been enjoying your site immensely since I discovered it a couple of months ago. Just wanted to reply to Steve W. since it's possible that a friend and I were possibly at the Gilson Road Cemetery at the same time last year as his team.

A friend and I (both sensible women in our forties living in Nashua) were driving home from an evening event with our small children, when our conversation turned to reports we had heard from neighbors of so-called hauntings at the cemetery. Just for fun, we decided to see for ourselves.

I pulled my trusty Volvo wagon into the new residential street across from the cemetery, did a u-turn and parked on the side of the road, with the high-beams shining directly into the cemetery. We both got out of the car and crossed Gilson Road, standing outside the wall and looking in.

At first, I couldn't see anything. Then suddenly, my vision seemed to shift, and I could see everything in the cemetery, all quite clearly, epitaphs and all, from a very foreshortened viewpoint.

There were two people crouched over a gravestone with a glowing electronic device (hope we didn't disturb them too much.) At a spot on the right there were some other people. There was also a small figure gliding along from left to right near the back wall at the pace of a marathon sprinter, but without legs or arms pumping. At the same time, I felt a very strong, disapproving...energy focusing on me that seemed to move toward me, so I turned and ran back to the car to, um, protect the children, yeah, that was it. My friend, an ex-army officer, determinedly moved forward to get a better look. I sat in the car and watched anxiously until she also ran back to the car. Comparing notes, she had also seen the small figure and had felt the disapproving presence.

My Volvo had never worked right after that visit. Various devices such as the air conditioner or radio would inexplicably stop working then come back to life, and the speedometer and gas meter would suddenly go haywire before returning to normal. My mechanic, an electronics expert, could not figure it out, and I ended up getting rid of the car.

Two to three evenings a week I must drive down Main Dunstable Road to the crossroads where I take a left onto Buckmeadow Road. But you'll never again see me take that right onto Gilson Road

Sandy,

The laws in NH are not always clear about cemeteries or public parks after dusk, so you'll need to decide how cautious you want to be.

I wouldn't bother with Pine Hill Cemetery (aka "Blood Cemetery") in Hollis, because it's posted.

However, I'm not sure that it's necessary to ask for police permission before visiting Gilson. Frankly, I recommend arriving before dusk, as the cemetery is active nearly all afternoon.

Also, I never make a long trek with just one destination in mind. I always have a Plan B, Plan C, and so on.

After all, if I arrive at a location and it's already swarming with aspiring ghost hunters -- some encouraged to "BYOB" by a self-styled NH "ghost hunter" currently working on a sensational/popular image -- I keep driving and find somewhere else to conduct research. Idiots People who think it's okay to drink before or during their research... they're a bigger problem than the legalities.

Frankly, now that she's actively detracting from how seriously we're taken in NH, I recommend doing as much research as you can, as quickly as you can. With drunks visiting haunted sites, our credibility is eroding at a fast pace, and I expect we'll soon have few public sites we can use for serious research after dusk.

Sincerely,

Fiona

I do agree that this site should be looked at again as most out door sites tend to vary based up environmental factors such as cold and heat and wind and rain. I do intend to revisit this site again come the spring and intend to set up a full over night investigation with night vision cameras posted at all 4 corners as well as EVP recordings done at various locations of the site. It is my intention to have some sort of security posted around the area to limit outside interference from teens like we witnessed on our last visit.

I do look forward to the follow up investigation and the results if may revel. I will gladly update you on our findings and would enjoy your input on the results. If you are interested please let me know and I will advise you of when we schedule the next investigation and I would be pleased to have you join us.

Steve,

Thanks for your report. It sounds like your team conducted a very thorough investigation.

However, with all due respect, a single investigation rarely reveals anything conclusive enough to generalize about a site's activity.

I've been investigating at Gilson Road Cemetery for over 10 years, and we've seen the energy ebb and flow.

During my last three visits to the site, all during late 2010, we encountered significant activity twice and nothing on the single visit between them. On one of our visits, we witnessed dramatic activity that we'd never seen during the previous ten years. I'm still not certain how to classify it.

When evaluating a site with years of reports from a wide range of investigators -- a site such as Gilson Road Cemetery -- I think a minimum of three visits are necessary.

There's also the question of resonance, and if certain personalities attract or repel activity. When one team associate is with us, we experience paranormal phenomena almost 100% of the time. When another former associate was with us -- over a three-year period -- his presence seemed to diminish or at least reduce the activity so our results were unreliable.

So, it may be worthwhile to return with a slightly different team, or a single research partner, to compare and contrast your findings.

Sincerely,
Fiona Broome

I just wanted to give a report on this site. I have heard many reports over the years regarding this location. I am with a team called New England Paranormal Studies. We are a new team and this is one of the sites i have been very interested in studying as one of our first few cases.

The investigation was conducted on November 27th at 9pm. We obtained permission from Nashua Police to investigate this location in the night. The road had a large amount of traffic including a car load of kids who stopped and ran into the woods and then took off running ans screaming about how it was to scary and they were freaked out to be there.

Our investigation involved video and audio recordings as well as EMF readings. We attempted to make contact at all 4 corners of the cemetery as well as at various points in the cemetery. No activity was noted on the EMF detectors. We crossed over the back wall in the left hand corner that has been reported as being very heavy and having a feeling of not wanting people there. No feelings of any type were felt by the two investigators that crossed into that area.

The following morning audio and video review were conducted. The video had nothing to revel. The audio had only a couple of gruff sounding grumbles that were unable to be determined as to what they were. There was only one section of review that appears to be a voice saying "ok bye" or "good bye" as the two investigators were leaving the area in the back over the wall.

It is my feeling and opinion only, that any paranormal activity that may have been present in the past has dissipated to almost being non existent. There are many reason as to why this maybe, however I feel that with all the construction and increase in activity in the area over the last few years this may have contributed to the decline in paranormal activity.

I understand that other investigators may have other opinions on this site and I respect their views. I am not saying that my investigation is the only one that matters. I am simply placing my findings here for others to review.

I find your site to be very helpful to other investigators and novices and look forward to hearing from others.

Hi all,
I did some research and found some facts on Rufus Lawrence. Rufus was born on Jan. 1, 1818 and died on Dec. 16, 1846. He was 29 when he died. His parents were Henry and Salley Lawrence. He married Mary A. Nutting of Dunstable on June 18, 1844. They had one child named Henry R who died April 18, 1846 at the age of 4 months. I hope this helps someone get closer to a lineage for him. His headstone says he was 29, but he would have turned 29 on Jan 1, 1947. Good luck!

I hope this helps someone get closer to a lineage for him. His headstone says he was 29, but he would have turned 29 on Jan 1, 1947. Good luck!

I had actually went to the genealogy place with my mother and made contact with a man from Michegan who is a blood decendant of Walter Gilson and working on the family tree I mainly got information from him and Dunstables town records which are free online but they are working on updating the site so told me to check back in a few months...
I still haven't gone to Gilson Rd I wanted to finish the classes through your site before I attempted to go as no one else in the group has taken classes. But like I said before something appears to be drawing me to that cemetary and I'm not sure if I am ready to go .. I'd like to go with a proffessional group first. Carol
