FAQs

At Hollow Hill, we specialize in haunted sites that you can visit.

We investigate ghosts at public places. We tell you what we discover. We share driving directions and tips for getting the most from your visit.

Our ghost photos are our own, real pictures, and they’re free for you to view but not to copy.

All of our reports and ghost stories are original to Hollow Hill. They’re copyrighted, as well.  (If you see them on someone else’s website or forum, let us know.)

We also offer one of the Internet’s largest collections of complete, original articles that teach you how to be a ghost hunter.

Want us to promote your event?  Generally, we can’t.
Here’s why.

My house is haunted. Can you help?

Haunted site 150w

Fiona Broome doesn’t usually investigate private homes.

She focuses on haunted public places such as parks, museums, cemeteries, hotels, and so on.

For help with any private residence or business, Fiona has written a step-by-step guide, “Is My House Haunted?

You can also check with professional paranormal investigators in your area.

Be sure to ask for references, and check them. Ask other professionals for their honest opinions, too… not just the fans of the specialist you’re considering.  (Please watch out for scams and con artists in this field. Some of them are very good at fooling people.)

If the situation is extreme or possibly dangerous:

If demons are a possibility, we recommend John Zaffis and PRSNE (203) 375-6083, Fr. Andrew Calder, and NEAR.

We cannot provide current lists of exorcists or demonologists in specific areas.  If no one linked on this page can help you, we recommend contacting your nearest Catholic or Episcopal church for information about their (free) exorcisms.

Your own church or religion may offer help, as well.

If paranormal problems are affecting your family — especially if children are at risk — we recommend Peter Haviland at Lone Star Spirits.  His unique approach to poltergeist issues makes him our first choice for those kinds of phenomena.  (He is very busy.  If a child is at risk, contact the demonologists listed above.)

Important: Demon attacks don’t occur suddenly.  If it’s actually a demon, the problem appeared gradually.

Any symptoms or issues that seemed to appear suddenly and out of nowhere… the answer is probably something else, not a demon.

For ghost issues, contact non-profit groups associated with the TAPS family of investigators.

I need help.  Please call me at [phone number] immediately.

We don’t call anyone we don’t know, ever. We make no exceptions.  If you are concerned about your safety, see the reply to the previous question.

If you are frightened or you might be in danger, ask for help in your community. Ask immediately, not tomorrow or the next day, or “if it doesn’t get better.”

Ghosts are spirits, so — if it might be a ghost or a demon — you should contact someone who deals with spiritual matters:  A priest, minister, rabbi, or other member of the clergy.

If a family member seems physically afflicted, call a doctor immediately.

If you aren’t sure what’s going on, but think you’re in physical danger, leave your home immediately and call the police. It’s possible that someone — living, not dead — is behind the problem.

Can you look at my photo and tell me if it’s a ghost?

At this time, due to the volume of requests, we’re unable to look at readers’ photos.

In the future, we hope to have time to examine and evaluate more great pictures from our friends and fans.

If you’re not sure if your photo shows a ghost, review Fiona’s articles at the Ghost Photography 101 section of this website.  There, you’ll see examples of very normal explanations of odd images in photos, and learn tips for spotting what’s paranormal.

Do you teach classes?

Fiona offers a free beginner’s ghost hunting course, and has written and contributed to many books.   She makes few public appearances.

Can someone from Hollow Hill speak at our event?

Fiona’s schedule is busy, especially around Halloween, but looks forward to meeting our friends, fans and other ghost hunters.

If you’d like Fiona Broome to appear at your event, please contact Ideal Event Management.  (They represent several other paranormal experts, too, so they may suggest other ghost hunters if Fiona is busy.)

Can I go on a ghost hunt with you?

At this time, we’re unable to include others in our regular research. If and when that changes, we’ll let you know here and in our free newsletter. (Subscribe using the form in the sidebar at right.)

Meanwhile, when Fiona participates in public tours, that information is usually posted on our homepage or in Fiona’s blog.

I’m under 18 and my parents don’t want me to go ghost hunting.  What can I do?

Most reputable ghost hunting groups won’t work with anyone under age 18 unless his or her parents sign a release… or even accompany the young adult on ghost hunts.

It’s not about the competence of young adults. Many people under age 18 are excellent psychics and ghost hunters.  However, we have to be careful of liability issues, especially if the minor’s parents are opposed to ghost hunting.

During 2009, at least two people in this field were discovered to be convicted child molesters.  That’s the kind of danger a group or event organizer cannot risk.

We generally don’t reply to email when we know are (or suspect) that the person is under 18.

(Don’t take it personally; we aren’t able to reply to most emails, regardless of the age of the writer.)

We never include unaccompanied minors in our investigations.  Generally, our team members must be at least 21 years old.

If you’re determined to begin ghost hunting, find a good local group and ask them to help with your parents.

There are risks involved in ghost hunting.  It’s important to work with an experienced group and learn the basics.

No one should go ghost hunting alone, regardless of their age.  Likewise, it’s vital to begin your ghost hunting with a team that has years of experience.  They’ll teach you how to be safe, and they’ll teach you how to get the most out of your ghost investigations.

Call me, please.  I need help.

Fiona receives emails with this request, daily, so we’re repeating this in the FAQs.

Fiona cannot call people.  If your problem is severe, read Is My House Haunted? (Ask your public library if they have it, or can order a copy on inter-library loan.)

If you feel that you and/or your family are in danger, go to the nearest mainstream church and ask for advice.  You’re dealing with spirits, so speak with someone who’s familiar with spiritual issues.

Don’t wait to see if things will get better; do something today.

I’ve been trying to contact Hollow Hill, but nobody replies.

We read every email and letter sent to us. However, due to the volume of letters that we receive–sometimes over 1000 each day–and the limits of our all-volunteer staff, we’re unable to reply to individual emails.

On an average day, we receive approximately 500 non-spam emails.  If we spend just one minute reading and replying to each one… that’s over 8 hours’ work. That’s not possible with our current resources.

Nevertheless, your questions and comments are important to us. They help us plan future articles and products at Hollow Hill.

We value your suggestions! Please use the contact form linked at the top of every page at Hollow Hill.

Thank you.

What happened to the old articles and stories?

They’re still here. In 2008, we redesigned HollowHill.com because the site (over 500 articles and photos, at that point) was too large to manage with a simple sitemap.  Even we couldn’t find all the articles, to update them.

So, we changed our software and redesigned the site.  Now, though it may take a few tries to find a specific article, you will find it.

(And, you may find a few other articles that interest you, that you didn’t know about.  We’ve added at least a hundred new articles since switching to this new design.)

Every article is listed in our sitemap or in a mini-sitemap.  You’ll find those sitemaps at the Sitemap linked at the top of every page in our new design.

However, if you prefer the old site design, you can still visit it.  Use the old sitemap (also linked at our newer Sitemap) to find most — but not all — of the old articles.

Please remember that the old articles have not been updated.  Some of them contain very outdated information and broken links.

In addition, when we expanded topics with new articles, we did not add them at the old site design.  You’ll only find them in the newer areas of Hollow Hill, the ghost website.

    • Rick, if this is for your subscription to the (currently infrequent) email newsletter, you’ll need to do that via the link at the foot of the newsletter. The service is managed by Aweber.com… I won’t begin to pretend I understand how to modify it! (Sorry!)
