Generally, no one can be sure. And frankly, I think it’s important to allow the loved one to move on to whatever’s next. I’m always a little troubled when people do things to keep the person (spirit) actively in their lives, because the spirit might linger here out of a sense of obligation.

My mom passed a couple of years ago. I still talk to her, out loud, when I feel that she might be around. Maybe she is, maybe she isn’t. But, that’s the extent of it. I don’t want her to feel as if she has to stay here, just to keep an eye on me or be a companion for me.

Keep it light and healthy, and then — no matter who or what the spirit is — you’re not enmeshed to the point of it being dangerous.

I’d just accept her as a slightly intrusive roommate, and otherwise just say hello to her, now & then. If she’s bothering you, it’s fine to talk out loud to her and explain the ground rules. Otherwise, treat her like any other roommate you don’t have to see very often.
