Ghost pictures can be real, fake, or the product of simple mistakes.
In our another article, Ghost vortex or camera strap?, we showed a variety of vortex-like images made by stray camera straps.
But, that’s not all we discovered in our experiments.
A ghost vortex–defined by some as a line that indicates an active passageway to the ‘other side’–can be thrilling to discover among your ghost pictures.
However, if you aren’t careful about camera straps, you may not know if it’s a vortex or something far more mundane.

‘Fake ghost orbs!’ That’s what many critics and skeptics claim.
To maintain credibility as serious researchers, we need to study false orbs. We need to know exactly what they look like, to differentiate between them and genuine ghost orbs.
In April 2006, we experimented with regular white flour and a FujiFilm FinePix [...]
That’s not some fiery anomaly intruding on our photograph. It’s one of three photos with bright orange splashed across them, at the end of one roll of film. The auto-rewind in our new Canon camera didn’t fully rewind the film, and our photographer opened the back of the camera, exposing the [...]
When a photo is most likely not an anomaly, we’re usually the first to indicate it, even when it’s one of our own photos, and one that we’d love to claim as a “ghost.”
Here are two photos that appear to show the abrupt appearance of a dramatic orb or series of orbs:

Some ‘ghost orbs’ look fake to us immediately. We’re so accustomed to looking at these photos, we don’t need to do much analysis. After years of studying real ghost photos, we can easily tell the difference between fake orbs and real ones. Here’s a good example:
The lower photo features a very [...]
When you’re hoping for real ghost photos, make sure that bugs aren’t responsible for your streaks, lines, and orbs. We see these ‘false anomalies’ online at other websites, with disappointing claims that they represent spectral energy. Here’s a good example of a bug:
As we recommend in Ghost Photography 101, we [...]
Real ghost photos? The photos may be real–and perhaps the ghosts–but the house probably wasn’t Marie Laveau’s.
The Photographer Says:
This photo was taken on a cool, dry evening in New Orleans (April 2005). The subject is supposed to be one of Marie Laveau’s homes, and we were standing across the street from it [...]
These two photos were a huge disappointment.
In order to identify anomalies in particularly dark photos, we scan them and use one of our graphics programs to increase the contrast, brightness, and saturation. Sometimes we can see more that way. (Our photos online are not enhanced, unless noted in the descriptions.)
When [...]
Ghost hunting can be a rollercoaster ride of excitement and then crashing disappointment. That’s what happened with these two photos:
The night was chilly and dry, but not dry enough for dust to be an issue. There were no bugs and it wasn’t the right time of year for pollen. And, on our [...]
