When a photo is most likely not an anomaly, we’re usually the first to indicate it, even when it’s one of our own photos, and one that we’d love to claim as a “ghost.”
Here are two photos that appear to show the abrupt appearance of a dramatic orb or series of orbs:

Some ‘ghost orbs’ look fake to us immediately. We’re so accustomed to looking at these photos, we don’t need to do much analysis. After years of studying real ghost photos, we can easily tell the difference between fake orbs and real ones. Here’s a good example:
The lower photo features a very [...]
When you’re hoping for real ghost photos, make sure that bugs aren’t responsible for your streaks, lines, and orbs. We see these ‘false anomalies’ online at other websites, with disappointing claims that they represent spectral energy. Here’s a good example of a bug:
As we recommend in Ghost Photography 101, we [...]
These two photos were a huge disappointment.
In order to identify anomalies in particularly dark photos, we scan them and use one of our graphics programs to increase the contrast, brightness, and saturation. Sometimes we can see more that way. (Our photos online are not enhanced, unless noted in the descriptions.)

Ghost hunting can be a rollercoaster ride of excitement and then crashing disappointment. That’s what happened with these two photos:
The night was chilly and dry, but not dry enough for dust to be an issue. There were no bugs and it wasn’t the right time of year for pollen. And, on our [...]
To demonstrate how humidity can create false orbs in ghost photographs, I took these photos at dawn on a dark, damp morning standing on a bridge. A stream flowed under the bridge from a large pond.
In addition, light rain was falling.
The film was a grocery store’s house brand, [...]
False “ghost orbs” occur in humidity. We’ve shown that on our Ghost Hunters Guide pages, These are not ghost orbs and This is Not a Ghost Portal. However, some people think that rain should photograph as lines, not orbs. We showed otherwise in Ghost Orbs and Rain, with photos taken in the [...]
Ghost orbs can be one of the most reliable ways to tell if something odd is going on at a site that’s supposed to be haunted. However, all ghost hunters must be cautious about calling something a “ghost orb” when humidity is present.
The problem with humidity in the air is that, at a [...]
On Friday, 10 May 2002, Fiona Broome taught a class in Ghost Photography at LightLines, in Portsmouth, NH. After an hour of basic instruction, the class went outside to take pictures.
The evening was somewhat windy, but otherwise dry and bugfree. The cemetery is near houses, but has no artificial light within the cemetery walls.

We wish we could say that these nice, clear orbs are evidence of ghosts. In this photo, the night looks clear, the wall in the foreground appears crisp (even in ISO 800 film), and so on.
Unfortunately, this picture was taken earlier on the same night as the [...]
